Washington State Outdoors - Films
Washington State Outdoors - Films
15 years of filmmaking shot by Crest Pictures in the beautiful state of Washington while hiking, backpacking, climbing, snowshoeing, car camping and day touring. Most was in the wilderness backcountry of Mount Rainier, the Olympics and North Cascades. Some was in the front country or while car-touring. All was filmed and edited by Robert. Back in 2001 he started shooting with a Sony mini-DV, then upgraded to JVC HD and Sony HD cameras, next he went to a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera, and now uses a LUMIX GH5 DSLR. He’s edited in Final Cut Pro for over 10 years. Feel free (yes, they are free) to view them at your leisure from our new Washington State Outdoors Vimeo channel. Click here: https://vimeo.com/channels/washingtonstate We've also compiled 15 or so additional shorts filmed throughout the west, including Canada, Alaska, Colorado, California, Utah, and Arizona for another Vimeo channel. Feel free to view them as well at the Crest Pictures channel here: https://vimeo.com/channels/westernstates

The one with lots of people remembering Harvey Manning is definitely worth watching, especially for those of us who never got to meet him. Thanks for putting these up.

Thx guys for your encouraging words! So glad you're enjoying. I passed on your comments to Robert, and he appreciates them as well. We're really happy to share our experiences, and hope to keep this channel up for years to come.

As promised .... The West Outdoors
The West Outdoors - Films
The West Outdoors - Films
A collection of shorts filmed over the past 10 years by Crest Pictures while hiking, backpacking, car camping or day touring throughout the West, including Canada, Alaska, Colorado, California, Utah and Arizona (excluding Washington - see below). All were filmed and edited by Robert Chrestensen. Most were shot with JVC and Sony HD cameras, then with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera, and now with a LUMIX GH5. He’s edited in Final Cut Pro for over 10 years. To view them go here: https://vimeo.com/channels/westernstates Go here to see Washington State Outdoors: https://vimeo.com/channels/washingtonstate FYI ... Now Robert is working on a massive endeavor putting together the most memorable, from thousands of clips, of all our trips since he began shooting in HD so we can share them with you all, as well as generations to come. He will end up with four shortish films (all free to watch on Vimeo when he is done) that will include the Olympics, Mount Rainier and the South Cascades, the Central Cascades, and the North Cascades. Sadly the beginning year in HD is 2010, which eliminates most of our climbs in WA, including all the volcanoes and Mt Olympus, and some really memorable early extended and remote backpacks (in Mt Rainier NP and Olympic NP, up to Whatcom Pass and beyond, Holden Pass, Ruth Mountain, Snow King, Maude, and the Goat Rocks and Gilbert), however, a lot of that footage can actually be seen in our earlier DVDs, available at most libraries throughout Puget Sound. BTW, I recently did an inventory check of these libraries, and will be contacting them so they can restock their shelves if any are missing.

We're trying to preserve and publish as much video as we can from all our trips over the years for everyone to see, now and forever. This film is what we did in Washington's most northern Cascades... the first of a four part series of short films from our hikes and backpacks in Washington since 2009 (HD footage only). Glacier Peak and Alpine Lakes Wildernesses, Mount Rainier and the Olympics will follow.

As with Anthology No 1 – Northern Cascades, we're trying to preserve and publish as much video as we can from all our trips over the years for everyone to see, now and forever. This film is what we did in Washington's north and central Cascades (primarily the Glacier Peak and Alpine Lakes Wildernesses). However, in this digital age we've limited it to just HD footage that began in late 2009. Mount Rainier and the Olympics will follow.

up.gif Very nice. I really enjoyed watching both. The way you show the various aspects of the landscape really highlights the deep appreciation for all of it. Beautifully done.

Thanks Martin! Glad you enjoyed. Here's Mt Rainier now. By no means is it meant to be a trail guide ... on the contrary, it's just an intimate look at the Mountain after eight years of filming in HD while hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing and camping around the park. So, get out and discover on your own as we did. Since it runs longer than most of Robert's shorts ... it might be best to wait till you can just sit back and enjoy it on computer or TV.

Just added the Olympics to our 4-part collection of short films. By no means is this meant to be a trail guide either ... on the contrary it's just an intimate look at the Olympics after eight years of HD filming while hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing and camping there. However, rest assured, it's filled with many unique locations in both the front country and the backcountry. Some are hidden gems, some not so much, some were really challenging and some had easy access. In any case, in the words of Tim McNulty, an esteemed poet, writer, conservationist, and friend, "The Olympics are a gift." Since it runs longer than most of Robert's shorts ... it might be best to wait till you can just sit back and enjoy it on computer or TV.

Thank you so much, Robert and Kathy, for sharing this cinematographic masterpiece on the Olympics with us. I've just finished my third viewing of it on a big monitor, and I look forward to enjoying it many more times into the future. Viewing this film is, I think, as close as one could get to experiencing the Olympic wilderness without actually hiking there, so it is a perfect introduction to the Olympics for newcomers. Those who are familiar with the Olympics will get the pleasure of recognizing many favorite locations as viewed through Robert's poetic eye, from an Olympic river delta on the shore of Hood Canal to waves on the Pacific coast; old-growth forest lanced by sunbeams; bears, eagles, elk and salmon; alpine meadows and basins; lowland valleys with sword ferns quivering in a light breeze and golden maple leaves sailing down to the rainforest floor in October. So many sublime moments are captured and presented here in one, superb 16 minute video, with Annastasia Workman's "Coastal Forest" providing excellent musical accompaniment. You set lofty goals for yourselves in your vision statement on vimeo, and in my opinion, you have achieved them.
