Risk #9 which actually should be risk #1 "Bears emerging from hibernation" https://m.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/8-risks-of-spring-hikes-and-how-to-protect-yourself/70004317

To answer your question, Most Americans don't realize there are bears in the wild and never have seen a bear. How can they forget something if they don't even know it exists in the first place?

Have I offended you today?

My one close up experience with a Grizzly was while I was sitting changing clothes. A mother Grizzly with two cubs came upon me obliquely from behind and passed within 12-15'. Although I left my stuff and walked away the mother looked at me and then ambled on. I wasn't mauled. It was, however, one of the great experiences of my life. I have had many experiences with black bears including chasing one way from our food with a dangerous weapon - a fishing pole....

My recurring nightmare was tromping over a snowfield in late season and falling through, landing on a just waking up and very cranky bear. eek.gif Hey, I was an engineer and spent a life of running what-if scenarios in my head. biggrin.gif

Every time I've seen a bear it is doing its very best to get as far away from me as possible as quickly as possible.

It's almost as if there is an entire industry based on trying continually to drum up irrational fear of wolves, bears, cougars, etc. And snafflehounds, the most dangerous of all wild animals.

I am thinking of setting up a bear spray stand, right next to Mocha motion, in Forks Wa. Crazy how many visitors come into Bobs sporting goods, during the summer, desperate for bear spray just to visit the Hoh visitor center.

eek.gif Wow, incredible....some "city folks" continually surprise me with what they don't know, and what they don't know that they don't know. And, I live in town (a small one, yes), but not out in the country anywhere. I don't think we even have bears here in ND. In ~47 years, I've not seen or heard of one. The only place I'm planning on visiting that would perhaps warrant a can of spray is the Ptarmigan trail and then maybe on toward the "goat trail" in Glacier Park. I'm not sure that this would require such measures for just a day hike. I would be looking for a trail partner for this little bit of exploring however....

It would be a good idea to carry bear spray in places with a high concentration of grizzly bears... glacier, Yellowstone, etc even if you are not going far/overnight. No need for irrational fear, just better safe than sorry.

make sure you let off a few cans in the back yard first so you have the skills when that huge male grizzly comes at you with hunger in its eyes!

To be honest, these threads make me smile and thats good. What makes me nervous EVERY time I go in the woods is the prospect of tweakers having mauled my vehicle.....

One bonus of having the TH at least 4 miles up a gravel road. 😂

I may not be the smartest, I may not be the strongest, but I don't want to be. I only want to be the best I can be.
