Very interesting. “The agreement, reached as part of a broader spending package that passed the House Thursday and the Senate early Friday morning, would allow the agency to access billions of dollars in new disaster-relief funding ....” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/the-energy-202/2018/03/23/the-energy-202-congress-finally-found-a-new-way-to-fund-wildfire-suppression/5ab41e9730fb045e48d05b7a/?utm_term=.5e3ce0a968a1

Based on that article this seems like a reasonable compromise -- there are still some complaints but in perspective it should be a big win. I hope the money comes through if and when it's needed. This Outdoor Alliance blog post points out that and some other good outdoor-related items in that massive spending bill
  • A fix for wildfire funding, which has been years in the making.
  • The Roadless Rule went untouched, despite a big threat against it.
  • The Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act (FLTFA) got reauthorized.
  • Land management agencies got stable or increased funding.
  • Better funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
  • Congressional oversight for proposed agency reorganization at the Department of Interior.
The Outdoor Alliance is "a nonprofit coalition of national advocacy organizations that includes American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, Access Fund, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, the Mountaineers, the American Alpine Club, the Mazamas, and Colorado Mountain Club."

POTUS signed the bill, despite early-morning threat to veto it.

Very interesting. Devil will be in the details. Separately, LWCF will expire at the end of September unless Congress reauthorizes it before then. Zinke's Interior reorganization plan - whatever it doubtless wonder it is - has yet to be revealed. Ironic that this Congress passed wildfire funding while defeating it last time on a straight party vote... could they be growing a spine, or is it simply deficits be damned?

Maybe it was part of a compromise - those who opposed it before got something else they wanted. Or maybe it was just the fact that if the bill failed, they would have had to delay their two week Easter Recess to keep the gubmint open. There is a reason they use omnibus bills.

Deficits only matter when the other party is in power.
