I'd love to join in if there's a group & also have easy availability.

Joey, can you explain a little more how this works? I can't figure it out from what you wrote. I have noodled around and nothing happens. Do you have some additional software on your computer?
Also, the 2015 aerials don't load properly, I only get a few sections in the upper left corner no matter how long I wait. What am I doing wrong? Is anyone else having this problem?

1. Geolocation.
You need to enable location services on your phone.
If you have an iPhone then you also need to give your browser permission to use location services.
2. 2015 aerials.
I suspect the GIS server admin has jiggered that layer so it will never get loaded correctly by 3rd party map apps. I have seen that once or twice before. No idea why they do that.
I will tweak the map I posted and replace the 2015 aerials with a layer that shows 2012 aerials. That layer works fine.

The road was in even better shape during my youth when I would hike around that area... Of course, that was during the 1980s and 1990s when conditions were more favorable down low. I want to go back and do the Nina-Pinta-Zekes trek.

It is cool to learn that this is the old Wallace Vista route. I will have to look at my old footsore book. Last weekend, I spent a lot of time looking for maps with the old road. Metskers does show this road, but no way to pull waypoints. I played around with Caltopo...hate the interface, but found a map layer that shows the old road.....choose the Forest Service option under Preset Layers heading. I do plan on going for all the Zeke's summits when it melts out.
In the meantime, exploring the old road will be my focus. So where is this landslide? I looked at caltopo and it would seem you guys got to the ridgeline or just past it a bit. I wonder how it would be to bushwack straight up the ridge?

We used the USGS 2016 Topo. We were well into the northern part of the traverse, but not to the switchback, where it heads south and upwards. Looking at the terrain, we felt that heading uphill through the woods to the next switchback might work, but lots of very rough ground to cover, with lots of blowdowns to climb over. We’ll take another look at it next week.

Towards the end of the week, whichever day is the least rainy, a couple of us are going back up. The group as a whole is looking at the first or second Saturday in May. We would love to have your help. I'll send you a pm Tuesday if you are interested in joining in towards the end of next week.

I checked the weather....Friday is looking best so far. Work has been busy, but I'm due for a day off so Friday. Besides that, a friend of mine is interested in exploring the area and has Friday off if that's ok with you. I will check with him to see if he is interested.
Do you have a link to the new map, I went to the usgs site and didn't find it. Just old scanned maps. I still need to try to get the gmap4 link working on my phone.
Any chance you guys got coordinates for the slide when you went? If so, I want to plot in caltopo to see where it is.
Looking forward to meeting you guys!

If you have limited free memory then Gmap4 might not start. Otherwise it should open right up. PM me if you still are having problems.

I'm interested, but my time is severely limited with family and work... But if it works out, I've got myself and my 16 year old mule (son)... So I'd like to stay in the loop. My ultimate goal is to traverse the 3 summits of Zekes. I did Lake Isablel 20 years ago and I've done Stckney the last 4 years in a row. So keep me apprised of any plans...

Saturday, Hiking Partner and I progressed up the Wallace Vista Rd to 3400 feet and close to the end of the final switchback. Earlier in the week, I was able to make a path around the landslide/blowdown area using a small saw.
Good news/bad news...it is passable, but slow going, and there is a nice creek for water at the second switchback, which is not shown on any of our maps.

The bad news is that the higher you climb, the worse the views get, due to the thick conifer forest. For a viewbagger like me, this was disappointing, but shouldn’t deter anyone wanting to access the top of Nina, another 1,000 ft up. The best views are near the second switchback, where you can look straight across to Mt. Stickney, but as the big old maples leaf out, these will be obscured. Also, lots of vine maple, so this would be a colorful walk in the fall and best in winter after the trees drop their leaves.
