This turned out to be my last real ABDSP hike for the season, as on this day & most days after it wound up being a little too hot for comfort. Still, I had decent turnout for this interesting loop hike in the Volcanic Hills area @ the southern end of the park. We parked off of the S-2 along Mortero Wash Rd., about 0.3 mi. down from the pavement.

The morning's temp wasn't too bad, but it would slowly & surely warm up & this hike basically had no shade. redface.gif We aimed for the mouth of Lava Flow Wash to the west.

We entered the wash & followed it as it curved north toward Red Hill.

Once atop the summit, peeps were pleasantly surprised by the views to be had. Yep, not bad for a li'l hill in the desert. wink.gif

From the top we dropped down to the saddle, then picked up W. Mortero Wash which wraps around the north side of the peak. There are only a couple of minor dry falls to go down, & lots of interesting rock. up.gif

We re-entered the flats east of the peak & made a beeline back to the cars. I think I can safely say that everyone was glad this hike was not a very long one, given the summer-like temp that day. cool.gif

It was only in the upper 80s, so could've been worse. Tho heat reflected off of volcanic rock prolly pushed the temp up a few degrees, lol. redface.gif
