Alleged Sockpuppet!

A young relation has been diagnosed as having Lyme disease. They had moved back here after living several years in the eastern part of the country. He became very sick and had to go to the ER. His mom had to insist on testing for it and the test came out positive. The kid is on antibiotics but mom is worried. She is worried because the disease is rare here. They are living in the far eastern part of our state Spokane is doable but I am wondering if there are any medical people anywhere in WA that are experienced in Lyme treatments just in case.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

I just googled this for the Seattle area and came up with this name: http://drsusanmarra.com I read her bio and this is her specialty and I see that she has had this disease herself which explains her interest. I thought Lyme was a possibility for me as I had a bunch of odd symptoms a few years ago but those symptoms eventually improved and I think I had something that was likely virus caused that my body eventually managed to fend off. I was tested for Lyme disease which came out negative. I understand that Lyme tests are not that reliable as far as testing obtaining positive tests so it is good that your nephew at least knows in which direction to look for his illness.

She's not a physician. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection and can be successfully treated with oral antibiotics. If mom needs reassurance she should ask for a referral to a medical doctor specializing in infections diseases. The Infectious Diseases Society of America has published evidence-based guidelines for treating Lyme.

The CDC recommends a two-step testing process to diagnose Lyme Disease. These "tests are designed to be very "sensitive”, meaning that when they are used properly, almost everyone with Lyme disease will test positive."

TS, vibes to your relative. As 70-2002 said, Lyme disease can be knocked out early with antibiotics. Based on my reading, testing is very reliable if done within a couple weeks of infection.

ditto.gif Be wary of quacks who diagnose "chronic Lyme Disease" notwithstanding negative test results or relying on questionable testing sources. Phony chronic Lyme disease diagnoses and costly treatment has become a multi-million dollar quack industry. NPR and other credible new sources have covered the chronic Lyme disease hysteria for years, see, e.g., health.com: “Chronic Lyme Disease” Isn’t a Real Diagnosis. So Why Are Doctors Prescribing Risky Treatment for It?, although some otherwise credible sources have repeated dubious claims, e.g., Slate: The New York Times Teaches the Controversy -- Both sides are not equal when it comes to chronic Lyme disease. I have run into a couple people who have shelled out tens of thousands of $$$ to chronic Lyme disease hysteria quacks. Both claim to have been infected decades ago, eschewing science to the contrary.

His mom suspects he has been infected for four years. He had a rash but it was not taken seriously at the time by the medical people. Anyway, he is back in school so drugs must be helping. I hope there is no permanent damage.

Hope he continues to improve. I'm going to a clinic now where they treat Lyme (I did not test positive for Lyme, I have something else.) They do offer phone appointments once you get started with treatments with them for ongoing treatment. You can PM me if they are interested. My doctor recommended these two books, which I have found incredibly interesting to understand the disease process. One is by a naturopathic physician: https://www.amazon.com/Healing-Lyme-Borreliosis-Coinfections-Rickettsiosis/dp/0970869649/ref=pd_sim_14_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0970869649&pd_rd_r=3a371019-8c8b-11e8-9f96-9391f60fc1b0&pd_rd_w=gTP1K&pd_rd_wg=KsqsG&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=2610440344683357453&pf_rd_r=DENC5H9TCRXRVGE2VJ2T&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=DENC5H9TCRXRVGE2VJ2T The other is by an allopathic physician: https://www.amazon.com/How-Can-Get-Better-Resistant/dp/1250070546/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1532139136&sr=1-1&keywords=chronic+lyme I was able to find both of them at our local library. They talk about a whole bunch of different aspects of Lyme, co-infections, and other pathogens. The naturopathic one is actually more scientific and harder to read, but they both rely on research that has been peer-reviewed for much of their protocols. Super interesting reading from two different perspectives; the mom might appreciate having more understanding. It is sobering, however. I'm sorry your relative is going through this.

Thanks. I think the anti biotics worked but he has to go see a specialist to see if there is damage to some of his body parts. Poor kid.

Treeswarper, that's so tough. frown.gif I hope he is able to recover. The books I'm reading make it seem like there is hope, but it's not easy or affordable for everyone.

They made it over to a specialist who checked him out, and sounds like the antibiotics worked and no damage to any body parts. Major relief.
