Thinking about a backpacking trip to Black Lake in the Pasayten, but the area was severely burned a few years ago. Anybody been there lately and thinks it's worth it? Also, has anyone heard of Fawn Lake above Black Lake--can't seem to find it on my maps. Thanks.

Keep following the trail past Black Lake up the valley to Ashnola Pass. You will see Fawn Lake right there at the pass.

I was in the Methow over Memorial day weekend and hiked to Black Lake. It was a beautiful hike, although a bit brushy for a few miles of the trail, but otherwise the trail was in good shape. Also, very exposed so not much shade heading up to the lake. We saw a few people backpacking at the lake so seems like a nice destination.

That's the appeal of the place. It's lovely and open, and you can see life coming back. It's sad and beautiful and hopeful all at the same time.

Have they logged out any of the trail between Black and Fawn Lakes? I went down along the Lake Creek trail from Fawn then up Fox Creek past Diamond Point in 2015 and it was pretty unpleasant with all the burned downed trees and fireweed. Nice giant rock slab near the outlet of Fawn Lake. https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8017538

Bring a fishing pole, there is good fishing. Selective gear rules so no barbs, bait, etc.

Just got out from a 3 day trip to Black Lake... Trail is all logged out to the lake... Pleasant campsite and no bugs! Past the lake it has been abandoned for many years and as Opus mentioned... a crisscross of hundreds of black sooty fallen trees and fireweed... very unpleasant... hockeygrin.gif

Happy Trails... pasayten
