I noticed a couple of cars with multiple windows smashed at Perry Creek trailhead the other day; mainly because one of them was mine. I didn't have anything takeable. None of the cars on the Dickerman side were so blessed, at least by the time we returned.
Don't know if it's useful information, but the car repair dude opined that he noticed upticks in vandalism shortly after school's out for the summer.

somewhere there's some mention about "cruel and unusual punishment" on some piece of paper somewhere... not exactly sure where that's located....
... but I kind of doubt you are alone in holding that opinion.
actually I could think of more creative methods myself (think last five minutes of Mel Gibson in "Mad Max") but this really isn't the venue for that sort of fantasizing.

I've come off the trail many times fantasizing I'd find a break-in in progress & I'd let loose with my bear spray, venting a lifetime of pent up rage on a window-smashing scumbag.
Some fine day ...

Some years ago, a hiker returned to an Oregon trailhead to find a car prowl in progress. He tried to interfere and got whacked over the head with a baseball bat for his pains--he was disabled for a long time. It's been suggested that we not try to interrupt a car prowl in progress.

Depends on what one uses to interrupt the "scumbags" with. I like the bear spray idea...

It's just stuff. Is it really worth risking life and limb over a hunk of metal and plastic?
The bigger problem is if you run into a theft in progress is whether the thieves will feel compelled to "shut you up" either through a beating or worse.
Probably best to treat that circumstance the same as finding a bear raiding a food cache -- try to back away undetected. Use bear spray if they charge.
Using a firearm-- you'd better be well trained and have a good attorney. Self-defense doesn't cover stopping someone from stealing stuff.

Wouldn't be able to relax 1 minute in camp. Would worry the whole trip about my truck. So glad I got my Washington State hiking over before this started. The only place I can remember that was safe (In those days) was the trailhead to William's Lake at the end of the Middle Fork Road!

I agree, however..... pragmatism wins out in this case. So back to the bear spray idea.

You must be quite ancient, as noted above break ins have been happening since at least the '70s.
To the others that advocate justifing extra judicial murders for misdemeanor car prowling -- get a grip. -- and be sure you never park next someone with the same attitude-- they might gun you down because they suspected that you were casing their vehicle while you changed your shoes for the drive home.

There's about 20 tweakers living under a bridge on 203 in Monroe. About a year ago they had a massive arrest and the place got cleaned up for a while but they're back en masse. This is a westside problem that's been steadily growing as a result of lax laws and a trend towards socialism. Sick and tired of seeing drug culture around here aloud to thrive. These aren't homeless people who are on the streets because they can't get jobs. These are vagrants who choose a lifestyle of drugs and homelessness.

Where do you come up with stuff srsly?
You create a caricature of gun owners in your mind and then you terrify yourself thinking about the image you just created.
We get it. You hate gun owners, conservatives, Trump supporters, et al.
We all know how much you hate going hiking on the eastern side of the mountains because you hate seeing "those people" and you want them stay on their side of the hills and shoot traffic signs and inbreed with their cousins in their trailers.
We all know your opinions so give it a rest already.
