Yikes. The article isn't really clear on what happened though...

Chances are there is a video of this on at least one phone or GohProh.

Why would you say this? You don't even know what happened. The article says his friends didn't see him fall.

There are three twenty year olds in this small space surrounded by glass windows. Two are watching one climb on the railing above a cliff. Then, they both look away and only notice the missing friend after hearing a thud. Possible, I suppose. Yeah, sorry, I'm wrong.

Park Butte Lookout

What's your source? The P-I story says he was "climbing on a part of the wooden structure." A Bellingham Herald story says the victim "was climbing on the lookout tower and apparently fell from the back side of the tower." No mention of his friends watching this.

It just struck me as a heartless comment. This situation must be terrible for everyone involved.

It's not a comment. It's a description of the events in the report which don't make sense. If you were observing someone climbing on the railing above that cliff, would you ignore it? Go ahead and call me heartless, but I would not.

It's the Youtube (I didn't watch it, but I doubt it's a condolence video) and enthusiastic "what a place!" comment that's disturbing.

RIP. I can't imagine how awful that is for his hiking companions (in addition to it being awful in general for his loved ones and friends, of course).
It would also be pretty terrible for the deceased's (as well as the hiking partners) friends and family to find lame comments by strangers completely removed from the event on the internet. While those generally say way more about the person making them than the deceased and his friends, people grieving after such an event tend to take things pretty personally, and they don't really need more grief, regardless of the exact circumstances or whose fault it may or may not have been.

RIP, and condolences to family and friends.
Sad to see the standard evidence-free speculation rearing its ugly head so quickly on this thread - Yana has it exactly right about what such comments tell us.
