My most recent backpack purchase was an Ultimate Direction Fast Pack 45. They are designed to be used by trail runners, but I liked the weight and made some modifications to be more friendly for backpacking. Now, I needed to do a test run. I told my wife I would be gone 30 hours and headed up Chatter Creek to the basin just below Grindstone Mt. I had been up (and down) Chatter Creek quite a few times but this trip made me decide it was probably my last trip up that gawd awful trail. But I might go down it again on a loop trip.
Trip synopsis: steep and rocky on a hot day, lots of bugs, still a beautiful and closeby hike.
The pack seemed to work fine with my mods and may have potential. I will post the mods in the gear thread.
Start of trail Just left of small basin upper center sit Ruth and Kara, my love interests Grindstone from Chatter Creek trail Looking back down Chatter Creek My camp Morning coffee view Cape Horn center left sits above Edna Lake Selfie before hiking out
I got a delorme message from my son-in-law saying he would run up and have coffee with me the next morning. I left camp early due to bugs (and my 30 hour timeframe) but I did pass him and chat for a few minutes on his way by. He was running to the White Pine TH and then on down to Merritt to catch a ride back to Leavenworth. Crazy!

If it's not steep it's flat. Chatter Creek is both.
I take this picture every time I go up or down this way. Would like to get to headwaters of Trout Creek, but never seem to make the effort.

I recognize your son in law. I used to take courses with him at UW!

Yeah, he got an BSc and MSc from UW as I recall. But he is a transplant from the midwest. Our daughter also got a couple of degrees from there. That's where they met.

While the Chatter Creek trail sucks much like Snow lakes trail and I swore off each of them long ago there are quite a few good places they take you to.

That does look like a pleasant campsite. I can't recall seeing that one, but then, it has been a few years since I've gone up that way (and experienced the knee-pounding descent, as well )!
