huh.gif Hopefully the small system forecasted to blow through this weekend will clear things up a bit. Perseid Meteor Showers peak the morning of Monday August 13th.

I took a media tour of the Maple Fire today. Fire is 35% contained and is moving slowly. It is burning in the underbrush. Fire will be contained to North, South and East. Fire will be allowed to burn to the east until it goes out. Lena Lake trail, Hamma Hamma Cabin and all the campgrounds should be safe. Even Jefferson Ridge does not look too bad at the moment.. just a few patches of torched trees. They have done some backburning and were able to save most of the trees and burn just the underbrush in the back burn area. A sprinkler line has been set up above and to the South of Elk Lakes. I have tons of pictures that I will post once they are all uploaded. http://mosswalks.blogspot.com https://www.facebook.com/MossWalks/ Interested media outlets my purchase my photos for publication. Some of them will be in the Shelton Mason Journal.

Fire lines are the FS roads on the N, S and East flanks, with no containment on the West flank (Jefferson Ridge), right?

Yep East is correct, not West. No containment for Jefferson Ridge.

Thanks. They enjoyed the media attention. I toured fire basecamp today and took more photos. I hope I can find a media outlet for them besides my local newspaper. I'll be posting many more to my blog.

Wow, you've taken some great pictures of the fire crew. I can't decide if the fellow with the beard (No. 13 helmet) or the third to last photo of the fellow with the blue helmet in your last post is my favorite. Oh, heck they both are. You're on to something here.

Sounds as if this is still a FS fire. The three sided work describes the initial impetus for the Park rehabbing its fire policy. They are finding themselves confining fire on towards the boundary sides of fire, while not suppressing on side towards interior of park. Current policy is for either suppress or stand back. Once they started review there were several other considerations. Best.

Keep Calm and Carry On? Heck No. Stay Excited and Get Outside!

DNR fire no road to the West to use for containment, very rugged terain. They took me in the 24 road and out the 25 road. Here is some raw video footage of mine.. I'm not a video person, so it's going to stay raw.

Hiked down the Skokomish yesterday from Camp Pleasant. It was very smokey- peaks obscured, eyes smarting. Was up at Home Sweet Home on Saturday and Monday. Smoke actually got worse after Saturday's heavy rain.

F'ing assholes rant.gif https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/men-charged-with-starting-fire-while-stealing-trees-from-olympic-national-forest/991896444 Wilke and Williams went to Olympic National Forest as early as April 2018 to look for big leaf maple trees that might contain wood highly prized for musical instruments, charges from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Washington said. Charges said that, in early August 2018, Wilke and Williams found a tree they wanted to steal, but there was a wasp nest in it. The men first used wasp killer on the nest but when that didn't work, Wilke poured gas on the nest and lit it on fire, documents said. The men then tried to put the fire out with bottles of water, but it grew into a 3,300-acre forest fire, known as the Maple Fire, that cost $4.5 million to put out, officials said.

Two accused of starting Maple Fire amid tree poaching Blaze burned 3,300 acres near Brinnon in 2018 TACOMA — A forest fire that burned 3,300 acres near Brinnon in 2018 was caused by maple poachers who poured gasoline on a bees’ nest, a federal indictment stated. Justin Andrew Wilke, 37, and Shawn Edward Williams, 48, were arrested for allegedly poaching big leaf maple trees on U.S. Forest Service land and starting the Maple Fire on Aug. 3, 2018. The fire southwest of Brinnon near the Mason-Jefferson County line burned for nearly three months and cost $4.5 million to contain, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday. https://www.peninsuladailynews.com/crime/two-accused-of-starting-maple-fire-amid-tree-poaching/
