What maps do folks use when they head out there? Printing out a bunch of sections of maps from online sources is turning out to be somewhat difficult as it's such a large area.

I like the ones from Beartooth Publishing. Get the separate 1:50,000 North and South maps, not the 1:100,000 full range map.

^ +1 Earthwalk Press maps aren't bad either. I would stay away from any Nat Geo maps...the one I had for the Bighorns-Cloud Peak Wilderness was WAY off in many ways. Incorrect trail routes were shown, Some trails never even existed... and then there are the dreadfully inaccurate trail mileages. It was as if someone used a rigid wooden ruler to measure the length of the trails from the map. No way they used actual field measurements for mileage. The topography was good, but they probably use the same source for that data as everyone else?

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

"Beyond Trails In the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming," by Nancy Pallister. This book is extremely detailed and comprehensive, and the latest edition comes with a CD loaded with additional photos and printable maps. I'll be using the information in September, and it's already obvious that this book will prove invaluable for its dozens of off-trail route descriptions.
