Backpacking up at Hayes Lake (Chain Lakes, Mt Baker), while fishing from the rocks on the shoreline we got a nice peek-a-boo from 2-3 of these little critters. They quickly became a hit with kiddos and adults. Never seen one in 30 years of hiking/backpacking in the North Cascades. Long-Tailed Weasel ?

Whatever the little guy was, he was sure cute. Looking at images online, it seems pretty close!

I'd rather guess that that is a short tailed weasel. The only long tailed weasel I ever saw had a very long body and tail and might have been about 12" long tip to tail.

I was between Upper and Lower Ptarmigan 2 years ago and saw the exact same thing. Had no idea what they were.

I'd agree with Short-Tailed Weasel (AKA Ermine) due to the underside being bright white, the obvious small size (Long-Tailed M/F are listed at 11oz/6oz, Short-Tailed are 3oz/2oz) and apparently short tail. Short-Tailed are the less common species in my experience, but both are a treat to watch.

I agree. From the video it seems to clearly be a short-tailed weasel. I've seen long-tailed weasels in Oregon, including in my yard, but their tail is as long as their body. I've never seen a weasel with a short tail like that.
