I still maintain that a "sting" (with a serious stinger) operation is in order... And why law enforcement departments haven't done this as a matter of standard policy instead of concentrating on the so-called "speeders" is beyond me.

Law enforcement does visit trailheads, I was sleeping in my car at Heliotrope Ridge trailhead a few months ago and an officer drove through very slowly at 1-2am then left. In my opinion, it would be a pretty poor use of tax dollars for police to hang out at trailheads all night. Statistically they won't be at the one that gets hit and if they are then the criminals will just leave and go to a different trailhead. There are larger safety hazards to society than trailhead break-ins so why would the police do huge sting operations to stop it. Similar reason to why police don't typically do speed enforcement on 35mph mountain roads in the middle of nowhere. It'd be a poor use of their time because they can improve safety to a greater degree by going somewhere else.
