In June, a brown bear killed a man hiking near his home in Alaska and later attacked a search party member:
Anchorage Daily News report
This happened near Anchorage during a short, casual hike near the man's home.

When you move out to where the wildlife lives, expect some interspecies interaction.

its because bears "attack" versus a person taking a bad step and falling. You can watch your step.
How do you stop a bear attack? Bear spray of course!

Yes, and if you find yourself w/o bear spray never play dead when it's a predatory attack, fight back instead. The fact that the bear was guarding his kill leads me to believe this was a "predatory" attack, and not a "defensive aggressive" attack.

Yes, it's all about "the illusion of control" -- i.e. the same psychology that causes people to be afraid of flying but not afraid to drive -- even when in terms of fatalities per mile traveled flying is far safer.

No, it is about a bear attack. No couch, no gun, just a bear.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

It is Alaska! Brownies are dangerous just like guns in white guys hands in Florida. I would not hike in Alaska unless I had a shotgun with slugs.

You guys can put up all the apples and oranges examples that you want, but it won't really alleviate most people's fear of bears.
They are real, they are scary, and they can easily KILL you!!!

True.
So are drunks on the highways.
If I was a betting man, I'd say my odds are way better with the bears.

I agree that griz are more dangerous than black bears. However moose cause more injuries and fatalities than bears in Alaska.
Quote: | Although you may come face to face with a moose in Alaska, keep in mind that a majority of moose-related injuries take place on the roads. Their presence on Alaskan roads and highways contributes to about 10 major injuries and one or two roadway fatalities each year [source: Alaska Department of Transportation]. From 1996 to 2006, 17 people died from moose-related car crashes [source: Alaska Department of Transportation]. |
According to this Bear Spray is statistically the most effective defense at 90% effective vs 76% for long guns and 84% for handguns.
