Tie me kangaroo down, sport ... Two Australian firefighters, on patrol with US Forest Service personnel in Washington state, were set upon by hunters, chased and shot at in an incident which has reached officials within the Foreign Affairs Department. The incident, which took place on August 23, shook Australia's support operation in the northwest of the United States and led to demands for local fire services to upgrade security and guarantee the safety of the crew. I had not heard anything about this previously. Of course this is from an Australian newspaper so they attempt to supply context which I think is unwarranted. Nevertheless it is a scary incident. I mean, I guess if you're looking at a globe that's sort of true... That's a weird story, and even weirder that it hasn't hit the local media still, even 2.5 weeks after the fact. I suspect that the reporting paper is either not aware or reporting the complete story.

huh.gif wth? and yeah: the Malheur and Bundy incidents are superfluous fluff, but I guess if you're in Australia it's like horseshoes: close is good enough.

I'm not going to further comment on the subject matter, but this story isn't adding up

Beyond embarrassing. Actively pursuing the firefighters with presumed intent to kill? Hope whoever these fools were are locked away for life or worse. They really think we're a bunch foaming-at-the-mouth inbreds these days.

Has to be more to the story, assuming it's true.

Miriam Fire. Phoned Naches RD. Confirmed event and arrests. Holy Blank. Fire, snags falling, rolling rocks and pieces of log, stump holes, bees, snakes, prison crews, on and on. The list was already long enough without this baloney. Providing security? This used to be keeping someone out of a front country camp, and especially away from day sleepers from night crew. I’ll be interested in seeing more. A rape of a fire base camp member in Utah. Foreign guests shot at. Not a good summer on the human front. Best. Pyrites

Well, the Sydney Mourning Herald is a legit newspaper, the oldest newspaper in Australia. Having said that, I can't find any other reference to this even that doesn't go back to this story. It would be weird if it was a hoax, but not impossible. I do know there are in fact Australian and New Zealand Firefighters in the PNW helping on the wild fires. Rumi

Sounds like careless hunters shooting anything that moves. Maybe they thought hunting at the edge of fire line would get them animals that were fleeing from the fire. Anyhoo the 'straylan newspaper about the firefighters being chased is fake news with references to the Bundy's for added hysteria.
