From the Herald
Quote: | 9. Darrington’s trails
The small town of Darrington in east county has the biggest wilderness to explore.
Around 80,000 people hiked more than 350 miles of trails from Darrington’s Neiderprum and Whitehorse trailheads in 2017, far outnumbering the town’s population of about 1,300. |
I never knew Lone Tree Pass was that popular (or that long)

Well it is a fluff article so… yeah that is pretty funny.
Neiderprum and Whitehorse trail heads are actually one trail head. I think the original blurb must have been over-edited and an entire concept was left out; as in - All the Other Trails in the Darrington area.
After the mudslide, Snohomish County finally developed partnerships with gateway communities to help them boost tourism and dig out of the economic hole after logging tanked, and articles like this are a good push for these communites.. This is something that should have been done in the 1980’s; too bad it took the slide for it to happen.

In a long stretch of the imagination maybe Darrington whitewater/boating could be included as "trails" too. The Sauk from Bedal to 530 bridge, but especially the Middle Sauk Class III from Whitechuck to Backman, gets a lot of attention. N. Fork Stilly and Suiattle too.

ok, so 80,000 / year is 219-220 a day. I'm with Kim on this one....I bet that was for all the greater Darrington area or the Darrinton Ranger District, and that fact was edited out.
Do the mental math on the hikes in the area - Suiattle, Image Lake, Green Mountain LO, Old Sauk, Downey Creek, arguable that the PCT counts in that total (over 1,000 thru's just from that, never mind the section hikers doing Stevens to Stehekin), Boulder River, etc, etc, etc. Many cars at these trailheads all summer long.
Fluffed up number? Perhaps. I think it's pretty clear that tens of thousands a year use Darrington area or Darrington RD trails. The only question being how many tens of thousands.

365 days a year, which doesn't happen. Expanding the hiking per Kim's suggestion, hiking season is, at most, 5 months, and peak hiking season is, at most, 3 months. Most hiking traffic is on weekends.
And the article expressly limits the scope to two THs: Quote: | Around 80,000 people hiked more than 350 miles of trails from Darrington’s Neiderprum and Whitehorse trailheads in 2017 |
