my custom lacing system turned out well I think. black 550 paracord with a paracord lock at the top. 3:1 heat shrink tubing to bind together the lace ends. at first I secured the lace ends through the lacing pattern like this:
but then I realized that it loops over the top of the tongue nicely like this:
I have to say the new lacing system is a great improvement. the lace tension is far more adjustable and persistent. I just bought a second pair of the same shoes and with the default laces the shoes feel much more blob like!

I tried something similar to this on some wading boots and the cords just kept slipping. I had to go with a "chockstone" style cord lock to hold the laces.
Do the cord locks you purchased have more holding power than regular "barrel locks"?

@schenk - I did a lot of online shopping for paracord locks before purchasing. I read a lot of complaints about various locks saying that the grip wasn't secure. I finally found the "gear aid" ellipse toggles which are more expensive but I haven't read any complaints about their grip strength. and so far they have worked well for me
