We go to PFI (Pacific Food Importers) in Seattle's International District on occasion, and I buy at least a couple of unfamiliar spices or spice blends from their ample bulk foods section each time, then figure out ways to use them once I get home. Among my recent favorites are the Basque and Cuban mojo spice blends. They also have Aleppo pepper and Ras al Hanout in bulk.

Marydave - thanks for this tip - Aleppo pepper is getting scarce at my usual source.

Thanks for the tip, marydave. I haven’t been to PFI and will have to check out their spices!

You don't find yourself standing at the top of a mountain without having started out in the valley.

At least they had Aleppo pepper the last time I was there, but it has been a few months so I hope they continue to stock it.

Another spice mix I like is Shichimi it is mildly spicy and adds a flavor I can't quite describe other than it's "Japanese" I like it in soup and on noodles. It is real good on grilled or pan fried tuna (not canned) too.

Is that a "brand", or a "flavor" name? When you say it "tastes Japanese", my impression is that it might be a blend of a number of elements commonly used together in Japanese cuisine. Penzy's Spices is known for that - they come up with their own concoctions of different common herbs/spices, then give the blend a fancy name.

As far as I know Shichimi is the name for a blend of spices.I was introduced a couple decades ago when a friend returned from Japan and brought some back. It can be found in some Asian stores and markets. Mccormick even packaged it for sale as Shichimi in their classic tin dispenser. They "upgraded" it to their gourmet line of spices and gave it a generic sounding name...Japanese 7 Spice. hahaha https://www.mccormick.com/gourmet/spices-and-flavors/blends/japanese-seven-spice-with-shichimi-togarashi-seasoning Shichimi has a wiki page too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shichimi

Sounds scrumptious. up.gif Gonna look for it. Surprised that it's mostly red (thus more chili); as I expected it might be green (heavier on the nori). Time for a trip to Uwajimaya! Thanks again.
