We joined up with two of our hiking friends and tackled Mount Stone (from the Putvin Trailhead). Yes, the Hamma Hamma road is finally open again. Stats: (approximate actual gain 5500 feet and mileage 8.5 miles) Our boots never touched snow Started out under brilliant blue sky and it stayed that way for the entire day. We went up the climber's route past the Pond of the False Prophet. Hit our summit and then came down to Lake of the Angels to rest our weary legs. Why does this adventure seem to always beat the crud out of us. It does have a lot of rock, scree, and boulder hopping fun. The Fall colors were awesome. Glad we had a chance to enjoy this one before the snow flies.

Always a good hike when you can see Baker, Rainier & Olympus (and so much more) from one spot! Thanks for sharing.

Great report as usual, but I especially appreciated the annotated pano which I wish I would have had in front of me when I summited that peak. What a great education, not to mention the view! BTW you stated that the Hamma Hamma road is finally open. Did you mean finally open to the LOA TH since the fire up there? Or finally open like it used to be back in the day when you could drive all the way to the Mildred lakes TH? Either way, thanks for sharing.

The four of us only drove as far as the Putvin/LoA TH, but I did not see any indications that it would not be open all the way to the Mildred Lakes TH so I think you'd be OK to go for it (I don't know the condition of the previous washouts, its been a while since I drove/biked up it...). The bridge/road to the south side of the Hamma Hamma (that goes to Jefferson Lake, Elk Lake etc) was closed right at the bridge. @ Brian R: Have fun! If you haven't been there before, the route up is like a giant corkscrew with two rock scramble sections; the first up to the to "top bowl" via some chutes, and the second up the summit block (going up this isn't bad, but down climbing is a bit interesting but still OK'ish given the really ledgy rock with lots of bucket holds to choose from).

Thanks I appreciate the response. Going to have to find out myself, sooner than later I think.
