Seems like there are a few different names used to reference this. I did this 3 years ago. I was in better shape then. It was much tougher for me this time. Absolutely stunning weather, just a perfect day to be up there. Larch are near prime. Ran into mbravenboer heading the opposite direction, had a nice chat with him.
59er Diner is on the verge of opening their new building at Coles Corner! Good news.
One little rant. I know the Forest Service has been having budget issues for years. The Chiwawa River Rd. is in really bad condition for several miles approaching the road end, and of course the spur up to Phelps Creek TH is really bad as well. Many roads just continue to deteriorate, obvious there hasn't been much maintenance in recent years. I'm getting concerned that some roads to beloved trail heads are going to become virtually undrivable. Not because of washouts or slides, just general neglect. Sad. Anyway, rant over and on to pictures.

Thanks for the report. Nice images.
I'm a little disoriented by some of the images
Question. Is the notch gap / ridge saddle in that image the portal to Ice Lakes?
Thanks for sharing the report

I'm not sure if that's a named peak, maybe what people refer to as Ice Box? This was south of Maude and the saddle above Ice Lakes.

Yes, wasn't it beautiful up there ! Carne basin is really extraordinary with larch....
I was just up to upper Ice lake couple days before you, so thanks for sharing pictures I can't. Cold at night. Windy as heck! A bit more excitement than I liked, getting to the ridge above Ice lake...
Yea, the road really is rough. I thought the last several miles before the turnoff were more tedious than the significant ruts up higher. Amazed as many cars get there as there are.

Sweet! Headed up there for the first time in a few days. How tricky would it be with two dogs on leash? Any scrambly sections?

A few steep spots that were muddy and slick (from melting frost). I'd say the trickiest part was below Maude. We didn't go up to the saddle above Ice Lakes, so picked our way down several hundred feet of talus/scree crap. Tedious but not too bad. I was in a party of 3 and I think we managed to avoid kicking anything loose that picked up any momentum and went flying down the slope, in spite of steepness and high volume of rocks of various sizes.
Have fun!

I've only been there once, probably 15-20 years ago. Went the long way via Entiat River. I remember it being beautiful, I'd definitely like to visit again.

I didn't see it before, but I do now! That was pretty cool, a tiny creek dripping over a rock slab and some moss. Significant build up of ice at the base of it. It's obviously been cold. A fair bit of stuff was melting in the sun during the day but plenty left still. Here's a bit more of the same spot.

Nice photos. I too was there this weekend. What a fantastic time. I did the loop from Carne Mountain and stayed overnight at Ice Lakes. Continued onto Leroy Creek and Phelps Creek back to the TH.

Awesome photos, very envious. I love that area but have not been there in larch season.

If it makes you feel any better, this has happened before to this road. It was nearly undrivable in 2006, and then it must have gotten some maintenance after that because it was way better when I returned in 2011. The Cle Elum River road has had similar multi-year cycles of decent to terrible and then decent again. So it may just be that we are nearing an every-five-year-or-so regrading.

Windy as heck is an understatement! I was in the area Fri-Sun and heard three trees fall on the climb up to Carne on Friday afternoon. One of them came down not 5 minutes after I walked past it - even saw a pretty big branch fall as a precursor.
