Another one! There's been a lot of TRs of this area lately. Justifiably so. Drove out after work on Friday and met a friend at Coles Corner. Not much better than the feeling of leaving work knowing your going to the mountains for the weekend. Car camped at Trinity on Friday. Headed up Carne on Sat morning around 8. My little Mazda made it up the road just fine. It ain't that bad!
We had grand plans of going up Maude, but got lazy and lounged around Ice Lakes instead Stayed the night there on Sat. A party was coming down from Maude late on Sat night. It looked really hairy. That pumice covered slope wouldn't be fun to be on after dark. We watched their headlamps slowly traverse the expanse. It was one of those situations where we wondered if something happened what would we do? Going up there ourselves seemed like it may likely result in additional people getting injured. Anyway... I digress.
Going up Carne
Donald Trump's Gold Plated Forest
24 karat
Giants walked here
Topping out above Ice Lakes
Target sighted
Tea drinking hippies!
Tilt shift
There is a very idyllic spot right between the two different camping areas of Ice Lake.
Equipped with a grotto-like waterfall
Sphinx
The smaller Ice Lake looked awesome. I'm glad I hiked over to it.
I bought a fun fish eye lens for my camera.
Great campsite.
Hiking out on Sunday.
This larch was one of the highlights of the trip.

I've been up 7FJ and Mt. Maude before, and boy do they look massive coming down from the High Route as you begin to descend down to Leroy Basin. While basking in my past accomplishments, I also remembered that from the same prior trip we got really lost on the way down. We ended up in the deep woods and never made it to Leroy Basin. That sucked!
The trail to Leroy Basin cuts over sooner than you expect going down that gully after that saddle. Missed it this time too actually, but soon realized the issue and found the "trail" again. Went down the knee buster Leroy Basin Trail and back at the car by 6:30pm.
This week's weather window was refreshing. Particularly because half the summer is now covered in smoke. The Buck Creek + Phelps's Creek areas are truly some of the finest in the country.
Final comment: Late night Taco Time on highway 2 is not a good idea
Dang...my larches were only 18 karat.
You'll get up (and down) Maude the easy way one of these days...

We weren't lost, merely taking the shortest route. Plus Leroy Basin wouldn't have looked all that good in the light of your broken headlamp.
