Snagged an online permit for the Stuart Zone and caught the last(?) stretch of nice Fall weather. This was the 1st visit for me and 2nd for Rich. Saw a few groups at Stuart Lake then one guy beyond. The path up to the HS lake was a little messy. We basically ignored wise suggestions and went straight up the burned forest. There may have been fewer logs to go over but it was pretty strenuous to hike on very soft soil. We strongly recommend sticking to the "new" trail. It is better described in Bluebird's post.
Burned forest:
Finally!
We saw smoke from the Jack Cr fire last Fall when heading upto the core zone. It must have come up to the edges of HS lake basin, but left the upper part mostly un-scarred. We were the only group and took our time to pick the best camp spite!
Larches were a bit past their peak color but many young ones were still bright:
Our 1st night was cold, then warmed up a bit:
A short hike up to the ridge above the lake:
Ingalls lake
Jack lake has been dry for years?
A few more:
Dipper bird dipping around
So many photo opportunities, probably my most shots per area. More pics here. I think the charred trail w/ many logs will keep the mass away for a while. When we hiked out, there were so many cars stretched out almost to the Caroline TH! The majority seemed to be headed to Colchuck...

fabulous, as always.
how'd you get that little dipper bird to hold still long enough to take its picture?

Wow. That "trail" was hard enough before the fire. Great perseverance pays off though. All that Fall color and no snow to contend with. Beautiful. ~z

Great work there Kenj. The real question is, HOW did you get that permit? LOL. Ive been trying every year for the last ten years without success.
