Does anyone have a good resource for identifying animal scat? I went on a hike this weekend and realized I couldn’t identify it all, and was with others who assumed I’d know. There was so many different kinds, I was quite surprised.

A good source is the Falcon Guide book: Scats and Tracks of the Pacific Coast James C Halfpenny Falcon Publishing, 1999

North Cascades travel warning: The National Parks Ranger group for the NOCA region is advising hikers, hunters, fishers, and climberss to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the park, and Cascades in general. They advise that people wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bears unexpectedly. They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity. People should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear scat is smaller and contains berries and possibly squirrel fur. Grizzly bear scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper. smile.gif

If not now, when?

The taste test is usually the best one to identify the source.
