Selfie fatalities at Taft Point I'm beginning to wonder if selfie sticks etc need to come with instructions that say "DANGER - use near precipices, wild animals and moving water can be fatal". Although these two apparently had their camera on a tripod. <sigh> shakehead.gif It seems people deliberately take chances these days just to attract followers on social media. Like the 3 who died at Squamish last summer. You feel bad for the families because it's so unnecessary, but it's hard to be sympathetic with that level of stupid.

Perhaps the Darwin awards needs a new category: "selfie related".

I believe they found a woman's body at the base of Walllace Falls next to her selfie stick a year or 2 ago.

A warning should pop up when you go into selfie mode? "warning gravity still exists"

People have been doing dumb stuff at Taft Point since Yosemite was a park. There's a famous 19th century photo of some women with linked arms doing the can-can at the edge. There's a lot of us in the world now, and we all have cameras, so I'm sure we'll just continue to see an increase in these kinds of deaths.

Heights didn't use to bother me, but Taft Point gave me the willies when I was there several years ago. I couldn't even go up to the edge, I stayed a step or two back. I can't even fathom the horror of falling from there. Avoidable, but a sad story.

Pride is one of the classical seven deadly sins, and narcissism a close relative. Doing it for the 'gram can kill.

selfie deaths are not limited to Yosemite nor falls from high places
From a linked article: A study published by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has found that selfies have altered people's perception of their faces to the point where they increased the demand for rhinoplasties (nose jobs). Forty-two percent of surgeons surveyed have noticed that patients are seeking surgeries to improve their appearance in photographs, especially selfies taken at close distance.[113]

Why? Avoid-ance : the action of keeping away from perform-ance: the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function. Observ-ance: the action of watching or noticing something. ignore-ance...

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

I've been to the edge, there I stood and looked down.... now I crawl up on my hands and knees and peek over

explain? explain it's not a good idea to perch near the edge of an 800-foot vertical drop so you can pose for your "selfie"? or that it's not a good idea to pose in front of a 2000-pound Bison for that once-in-a-lifetime Instagram post?

I totally agree with this. It's frustrating when people don't act in their own interest, but I can be sympathetic. But for grace of God go I...
