Article from Outside online I'm not from the NW, so this was the first time I've learned about this tradegy. 9 deaths, Wow!

That was a tragic event, very sad to say the least. The aftermath was a storm of contention. I knew a couple of the expert witnesses who testified; one for each side. No amount of testimony could bring back the kids...no amount of blame. One could only hope something could be learned from what happened. Like most tragic events, no one single thing was the direct cause. It still makes me choke up a bit...those kids had no idea what was in store for them.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

Sjolseth and I had to make two trips to Hood before a successful summit bid. On the first outing we had just finished putting on our crampons and the winds knocked us off our feet twice. It was time to turn around. The best time to climb Hood is when it invites you with a bulletproof high pressure ridge. I have always thought it is the second riskiest of the state highpoints.
