One of the many ways policy makes fires worse. Sometimes it's folks who stand in the way of thinning to cut fuel loads. Other times, it's policy biased towards logging... Provincial rules require spraying of fire-resistant aspen trees to make way for valuable conifers
Quote:
Last year, 12,812 hectares of B.C. forest was sprayed with the herbicide glyphosate. It's an annual event — a mass extermination of broadleaf trees mandated by the province. The eradication of trees like aspen and birch on regenerating forest stands is meant to make room for more commercially valuable conifer species like pine and Douglas fir. But experts say it also removes one of the best natural defences we have against wildfire, at a time when our warming climate is helping make large, destructive fires more and more common

Aspen groves in Arizona were being fenced in because the elk were eating it. There were regeneration problems with Aspen--I'm thinking it was a lack of fire? and so the Forest Service was trying to get it to sprout again. This was on the Mogollon Rim area of Northern AZ.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Treeswarper- Sounds like another example of slow elk. The problem once again must be a lack of wolves. BC broadcast sprays glyphosate on their forests and at the same time has a carbon tax? What's wrong with this picture?

Slow elk do not graze on Aspen as far as I know. Along the highway east of Payson, after you've arrived on top of "the rim", there was a pullout with a display which explained that aspen is Elk Ice Cream. Apparently, the real elk love the young aspen trees. Anyway, the FS was putting up some pretty impressive electric fences around Aspen groves. The fences are solar powered. Dunno about wolves. The Mexican Gray Wolf can be found in that area. So can the Rocky Mtn. Elk Foundation.
