My final outing of 2018 was a pure photography trip to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh...

Is photo #29 a female Guam Kingfisher? If so the species is extinct in the wild and she represents any future survival. Snakes introduced to Guam have eliminated the native population.

Yikes! Yes, those are Guam Kingfishers. I don’t know if one of them is female.

The male has a cinnamon colored breast. Thank you for the visual treat to the new year.

Is that a Steller's sea eagle? That is a heck of a powerful looking beak!

Yup, a Steller's sea eagle, which is one of the three largest eagles (largest by weight, and maybe 3rd largest by wingspan). The bald eagles, impressive in their own right, looked puny by comparison. Also, if you look at the close-ups of the Steller's sea eagles in larger size you should be able to see raindrops forming beads on the head and feathers.

I haven't seen a side by side comparison of bald and Steller's. They have a pair of them at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. They do appear to be rather large!
