RodF and ski previously posted about the public meeting that takes place on December 13, 2015 at 5:30 PM in Port Angeles in this thread.
This post is intended to make it clearer in its headline that the public meeting takes place TONIGHT, December 13, 2018 at 5:30 PM in Port Angeles at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, 401 East First Street, Port Angeles.
Not everyone who reads this forum may be aware that road access to ONP in the Elwha Valley is now closed at Madison Falls, near the pay station, due to flooding damage to the Olympic Hot Springs road in the vicinity of the now flood-destroyed Elwha campground. This road damage closes vehicle access to multiple trailheads, including Elwha at Whiskey Bend, West Elwha, Cascade Rock, Griff Peak, West Lake Mills, Happy Lake Ridge, Boulder Creek, Hurricane Hill, and Wolf Creek trails. Some of these trails can be accessed by vehicle via other trailheads, but closure of the Olympic Hot Springs Road at Madison Falls does block vehicle access to multiple trailheads. Long road hikes are now required to get to the very popular Elwha Trail at Whiskey Bend and to the quite popular Boulder Creek trailhead to access Olympic Hot Springs and Appleton Pass, for example. Who knows how long this situation will persist?
The public meeting on December 13, 2018 may shed some light on these issues.
I got a phone call earlier this afternoon.
Survey and monitoring equipment is currently in place to determine whether soil stability is suitable for placement of a bypass road around the washout. (Option 1 of 3)
Reconstruction of the road will require elevating the roadbed. (Option 2 of 3)
Either option will require construction (or reconstruction) of approximately one mile of road.
Third option is no action, of course. (Option 3 of 3)
Expect no actual work being done until at least 2021.
