It is unfortunate. Something similar (in motive) happened earlier this year: A Dream Ended on a Mountain Road . The deceased in that instance expressed a certain naive optimism:
Quote:
Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own
Also recall a story from some years back of backpackers who wandered into (I think) Afghanistan ( ! ) who were attacked by a local radical band and somehow managed to escape their captors before being killed or ransomed. The last places I'd go for a holiday would be Muslim countries that are invariably home to factions of the population that are extremely poor and often radicalized. Then go right into the remote areas where just such types hang out. One thing I learned when traveling abroad was to try to blend in, respect the local culture, be humble and unobtrusive. In each of these cases, the deceased did the exact opposite.

It's too bad so many of the worlds most spectacular and unusual mountain destinations are in such hot spots.

It is because remote areas are where desperados retreat to when things get tough for them. In Italy it is Sicily and Calabria, in France Corsica, in Southeast Asia it was the Golden Triangle, and in the US it was Western Arizona and Eastern New Mexico. The frontier is always a dangerous place.

It's a news site, but if you would rather you can google "Imlil", the village nearest the site of the incident.
Thank you! ~z Edit: Well I clicked on that link and a huge video started playing loudly with no way to turn it off. What the heck?

True. I recall reading a book of an Everest Expedition I think in 1996 where Kropp bicycled about 1200 miles to climb Everest, and along the way he was attacked by young thugs while on his bike, not sure if he was robbed.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

RIP, condolences, and sad trombone. There was a time when adventure travel in the Islamic world was easy, fun and cheap. And reasonably safe if you followed a few basic rules. The final stages of capitalism is all sad trombones.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but don't you mean "imperialism"? (Check Wikipedia.) Just sayin'.

You'll get no argument from me there- the two go hand in hand.

Contour5 - Sure, but it's not unique to capitalism, which was really more my point. Probably a basic human foible, maybe the root of all evil. We're not that far removed from other primates that way, when it comes to behavior in groups: "scheme-y backstabbing machiavellian bastards who are awful to each other": Sapolsky, beginning at 9:32 in the entertaining and informative doc: Stress, Portrait of a Killer .

Years ago I built a pair of wheels for a guy who was about to set out to bicycle around the world. A few months later, his wife called to advise that he was knifed to death in Afghanistan, likely by thieves.

This problem is ridiculously easy to circumvent. If you've maxed out your visits to one of those sites, just use Chrome and open the link "incognito mode."
