Wife and kids go back to school on Wednesday but I'm off until next Monday. That gives me Wed/Thur/Fri to go out for a 2-nighter. Cold is okay. Wet is okay. I prefer not to deal with tons of snow so low elevation is better. Would prefer to be able to build a fire but it's not a deal breaker. I'm an experienced backpacker but haven't ever really gone in the dead of winter before. Willing to stay near Seattle, go to eastern WA, or somewhere in OR. Suggestions?

Ross Lake. You should be able to hike to what's normally Cougar Island this time of year. Some good scenery if the weather allows, lots of big trees, the hike in and out isn't very challenging but you have access to all the trails you could want to explore that middle day.

I drove by a couple of trailheads last summer in the Odessa area. Odessa Trails Sounds like one is long enough. I'd guess you'd want to be ready for wind and a bit of snow.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Duckabush River. Could be a problem however with wind fall in the burn area after the recent windstorms.

Your forecast is looking kind of sucky. If you still want to give this a go, perhaps the Colockum. Drive south of Malaga to the headquarters of the SWA, where you now have to park near the end of the pavement because of a washout. Follow the old road down to river level, cross the private inholdings, and then camp somewhere along the Tarpiscan. Then you have a full day to explore the top of Cape Horn and beyond. It's gonna be windy though. rolleyes.gif
