I hiked Mailbox back when the route was marked with a toothbrush. But I will never understand why people get their panties in a twist about it these days. It's a boring hike and if the masses want to flock there, let 'em. Keeps the other, far more scenic places less crowded. If you want a solid workout, there are plenty of butt kicking workouts elsewhere in the cascades. You'd think that someone who refers to themself as a diehard would know that.

1) Gatekeeping is ugly and benefits no one.
2) Mailbox has been overrun for at least 20 years - it was a lovely forest walk with plenty of solitude before "I deserve to be here I'm training for X and this is the only place I can do that for some reason" people like CC clogged it all up in the first dang place.
3) He had to have been a newb in mountaineering boots with a goal at some point, right?
4) "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

Yeah I don't understand why someone who "loves the mountains" that much would hike frickin' Mailbox over and over again.

exactly. Still, it's a great rant that touches on a lot of the changes in hiking culture in the past decade: the disjunct of instagram hordes swaddling nature with their soiled t.p. litter...but posting pictures of unspoiled nature.
A little consideration can go a long way, and the lack of it can trash things real quick.

This hike is near North Bend right? There is a mailbox on top, hilarious! Will definitely be checking it out on the next sunny Saturday. How many ice axes do I need?

Two, at least. One to swipe at unleashed poodles, another to destroy the mailbox. You'll also want plenty of bear spray for all the millennials who won't shut up about how hard it is but "so worth it". Be sure to grab a few selfies at the top.

Don't forget the yoga pose, or the two hands heart while selfie taking

The old trail is just our version of the grouse mountain grind. A steep rocky no nonsense route under the chair. No redeeming features whatsoever other then a burly training workout.

What value is there in ranting and name calling. Why post this?

lock the thread if you don't like it. i think it's funny considering the mailbox topic has come up a dozen times or so over the years. there are many similar threads throughout trail talk and other subforums that are equally pointless. lock those too while you're at it. might as well lock the wolves and global warming threads. and don't forget what you're watching on youtube and favorite books/movies threads; those are just way too pointless.
did i miss any?
