Air horn. They work on dogs, bears, cougars, and doesn't run the risk of the wind blowing capsicum back on you.

Seriously? Has that been field tested? On griz? One disadvantage to the horn, though - no good in the possible event of human predators. But if they had a gun, it probably wouldn't matter.

Should this guy be referred to (let’s call him Bob) as something like Bob, Lion Killer. Kids called ____, Daughter of Lion Killer.

Always carry a red laser pointer to distract them lighter than spray or the tool that cannot be mentioned.

I bring a little air horn with me when I go hiking. Within the Olympics it has successfully chased off curious mountain goats and bear. Never met up with a cougar so not sure how it would work against a big putty tat.

I think a horn would work. Loud noises certainly scare my cat.... !!!!! I think I've read that making loud noises is one defense against predators. Even if it just startles them out of attack mode.

The wrester was riding his bike illegally I believe in the The Olympic National Park when he was attacked by a couger. He managed to get the couger in a full nelson and there was a stand off for a time until the wrestler let go and the couger took off. No charges were filed as it was viewed as a lesson learned and because of the injuries incurred by the wrestler.

As stated in so many other threads here, I will continue to keep my bear spray handy. Proven to work more often that guns.

Well, this "rare thing" has now happened to at least four people since May 2018, three of which were in the Cascades where two people were killed. The attack last May involved two persons on mountain bikes, only one survived.
List of KNOWN fatalities:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_cougar_attacks_in_North_America
It's possible some unknown (number > zero) of missing persons were killed by cougars.
Also keep in mind, the actual number "hostile encounters" is impossible to know. Such encounters may have caused minor injuries and/or were 'mitigated' by various methods. Avoidance of paperwork leads to under reporting...
