Been wanting to spend a night on top of Ellinor ever since I first went up it 9 years ago for the first time with the Mountaineers. Always thought it would be in the spring and down on the lower shoulder where it's most flat.

The freezing level was hovering around the 10,000 foot level the week before so the snow had some time to settle and the snow conditions were ideal. Didn't even use snowshoes that I brought to the summit. Forgot my ice axe but had crampons for the chute and took it slow and steady and felt comfortable for the most part.

After all the day hikers left I made my way up the final slopes to the summit and was pleased to see an area just big enough for the tent. Took my time and made a nice flat spot to set the tent on.
This weekend would have been an ideal weekend to try some rare winter climbing deeper in the park like Constance or the Brothers possibly with the low elevation trails being dry, but maybe next time. Think Olympus is still waiting for a winter ascent.

This weekend venture felt like a mini vacation for me. After the tent was up and sleeping pad and bag were in I took a short nap while there was no wind at the top and it was quite warm, mid 40's probably at 3:30pm. Had a windy night of 5-10mph winds buffeting the tent which kept me up.

A mellow trip despite being in my exposed location in the middle of winter.
Enjoy the eye candy.

I've never done the sleep-on-the-summit thing. Your photos make me think I've missed out!

Reply to RichP: The tricky part is dealing with avy danger. But conditions were great and the snow was well settled. The timing couldn't have been better. Snow started on the road just past the lower trailhead so was easy to make it there in my 2wd.

Hey, I was up there that morning!  I saw you on the summit so I stopped just short to take photos and give you some privacy, in case that's what you were seeking camping up there...  After the sun was up I briefly tagged the summit, but didn't see you.  I assume you were in your tent.  Anyway, it was a glorious morning.  I'll piggyback on your TR and add a few of my pics from the morning.

Your "dawn selfie" with all the volcanoes in a row is frame-worthy! Just gorgeous.  I like the sunburst shot thru the trees, too.   up.gif

Yah I heard someone come up just after I went in the tent and started putting away my stuff and getting ready to take the tent down. I poked my head out a minute later and you were gone.
