Coyotes playing a dangerous game.

This coyote is marking its territory. Near the end of the video the coyote yips & barks. You can also see that another pair of eyes show up in the darkness. A wolf

5 minutes later

At the very beginning of this video ( you have to watch very carefully)

wolf in center of this frame
wolf in center of this frame

the black wolf sprints through the cameras field of view ( right to left ) going after the coyote. Other wolves show up. Listen at the very end of this video. The coyotes last vocal tone is completely different. Almost sounds like a cry. Did it get caught?

Pretty awesome, BPG! The coyote may not have faired very well that night.

Very cool.  Do you know how many wolves are sporting radio collars?

Is that a good sized coyote or wolf? Were you able to determine if the canid was rolling in its
urine?

Cookie does indeed seem to enjoy rolling in the snow. But coyotes will do so to make their scent markings airborne. The entire link is interesting but scroll down to page 9 for pertinent information regarding rolling behavior. https://www.wellbeingintlstudiesrepository.org/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1035&context=acwp_ena

That's a coyote. Its laying down scent

I've noticed in this game camera location, it's been a "pissing match" between the coyotes & wolves. The 2 predators laying scent over one another's. Its been a back & forth. Either scent marking with rolling or peeing. Interesting to watch

Thanks Mike for the link with the details and Bootpathguy for the amazing videos.

But I'm still confuse how does it work? Does coyote

a) first pee and than roll in the snow where she/he just peed

or

b) smells the snow (looks like in video) and rolls in the snow (where some other animal, looks like maybe wolf might have peed before)

do they do it in summer too, or only in snow?

are they making the smell of pee airborne, or just their body smell?

how does it make the smell airborne, wouldn't rolling in it make smell more cover your body and kind of erase it from the ground a bit?

Answer b. Where a coyote or wolf urinated and / or rolled in the snow.

Thats what I'm capturing on video. Ill try to post a sequence

Its been a back and forth between these 2 groups. A pack of 3 coyotes and a pack of 4 wolves. Laying scent over one another's.
