Weird problem, but not unexpected since Bald Eagles are opportunistic feeders...
Quote:
What can be done about all those garbage eagles? As the Metropolitan King County Council continues to mull how to best dispose of the 2,500 tons of trash deposited daily at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill near Renton, one thing they’d like to see is a plan to better manage the hundreds of bald eagles that haunt the landfill, feasting on the refuse. About 200 bald eagles frequent the landfill, perching on trash and diving between bulldozers to pick out choice morsels. There are adult eagles, with their distinctive colors. And there are juveniles, their heads not yet white, with mottled brown and white feathers.
I heartily endorse a plan whereby the Cedar Hills landfill is closed on schedule, and all the material is then forever more sent to Roosevelt Regional Landfill. Our local eagles will thank you. hockeygrin.gif

Not sure why it's a problem? Eagle's gotta eat. Won't the landfill be capped once it's decommissioned?

One issue - some eagles are treating the Cedar Hills buffet as take out, and redistributing it around the area.
Quote:
David Vogel was one of nearly 80 people to speak at a public meeting last month, all against extending the life of the landfill. He stood before the county council and held up, inside a carefully sealed Ziploc, a biohazard bag containing human blood that he said he’d found in his yard, just west of the landfill property. “Anybody that lives within close flying distance of the landfill knows that the eagles deposit this stuff everywhere,” Vogel said. “The eagle population has exploded in the last five years, and why? Because they have a free lunch at the dump.”

Eeewww, that's pretty gnarly. Kind of a side discussion, but the Cedar Hills Landfill is one of those "you should've done your research" issues for me. It was there long before the subdivisions surrounding it existed. People built homes near it then started complaining about smells and birds. Well, duh. Same issue at SIR/Pacific Raceway. Don't like the sounds of loud engines, don't move in next to an existing racetrack that was purposefully built out in what was the boonies at the time.

Even worse, they are also thieves and bullies.

The nice thing about Kleenex is you can selectively wipe, the Sioux could wipe one nostril against the tears from Cheyenne slaving and warmaking, and vice versa, while it's inapplicable for the rest of us because we have the honor of being attacked for human vices present throughout human history.

There is little need for elaboration upon the obvious. A poster felt a thread about landfill supping birds was the appropriate venue for expression of his political biases, and received the appropriate response.

Confusing. Do we need kleenex because we're allowing the eagles to eat the garbage or because of all the other things we've done wrong? Maybe it's all of the above. lol.gif

All of the above. Then the eagles carry them all around the landfill!
