We were in the south end on Saturday and decided to explore the White River Forest between Enumclaw and Greenwater. Access to this land requires a $45 (annual) permit from Hancock Forest Management. Daily non-motorized permits are no longer available The Muckleshoot purchased this land from Hancock years ago but the tribe still uses them to manage the permit system.
Parked at the pullout for FS 6300 and headed up beyond the gate. The first mile was uphill but the next mile was flat. Encountered a lone elk along the way. After a couple of miles, our road ended and it was time to bushwhack down to the falls. We cliffed out at the top of the falls, but backtracked and descended a ridge down to creek level before walking back upstream to the grotto.
After a leisurely lunch at the falls, we did the whole thing in reverse. Neat place to explore, but too bad that you have to pay $45 just to see it.
