They could totally upgrade their system to a more user-friendly, transparent, responsive system.With today's technology, there's no excuse for not having a modernized permit system
I did a walk up last year at Longmire and it was no problem. There were about 4 other hikers that did the same and it wasn't an issue at all.
Definitely try to stay at Indian bar and definitely take Seattle park.

How many days were you hiking?
I suppose it depends on when you go. If late July - through August peak season it will be harder. Also, if you are taking more days then you need more camps - so maybe harder. Or is that not the case. Everyone wants Summerland, Indian Bar, Klapatche, etc. I'm fine with passing through those areas and camping in the woods - if that is what it takes to land a permit.
