Now that Mailbox is clamped down tightly for parking, I noticed hikers are now parking approx. .8 miles just before the first bridge/rock face and walking back to the Mailbox TH. (this is very far past the Granite Creek TH). People are walking all over the paved road as well. Just a heads up. Be careful driving down there.

Yep. It's a popular trail. People might want to consider taking the bus in. You should always drive carefully, and never outrun your ability to brake or your sight distance. Especially on roads where people go to hike, you should expect people on the road. Happens everywhere, you should see the miles surrounding the turnoff for Lake 22. Also, scenic roads will often have cyclists, and it's bad form to maim them. So, drive carefully is great advice! smile.gif

Yes, the Mailbox parkers are now clogging up the Mine Creek recreation area parking, despite the added 0.8 mile walk. Must be a headache for the boaters who use that spot as access to the river.

The summit has always been that pointy part where there is no more up. The mailbox was there before it was cemented and rocked in. Take the bus.

No. Buses are slow and inconvenient. Build a bigger parking lot.

Have you read about King County's Trailhead Direct? Not slow and inconvenient, whereas driving a mile or more down the road to find a place to park and road-walking back to the trail head is. Of course it's not always the best choice, for people wanting to go elsewhere after their hike and a car is necessary. But a lot of people do Mailbox, then head back home. Trailhead Direct is perfect for them. People keep whining that nothing's being done. Is is, and the first parking lot expansion was one, the Trailhead Direct is another. DNR and King County are part of the Snoqualmie Corridor recreation plan, and both these agencies work to serve the future of more car-less users who want to hike in the Issaquah Alps. The future isn't for dinosaurs. That meteorite has sailed.

No. Not gonna happen, at least any time soon. Is the bus less convenient than wondering if you'll find parking, or if you'll be towed while you hike? Also, there's limited parking, be a team player.

Probably referring to the fact that most of the road is a no parking zone now.

It certainly will not happen without pressure. The agencies should be serving up access people actually want to use, and addressing the customer's proven desires. If this means a bus for folks who don't want to drive, *and* more parking for those who do, then that is what is called for. Agencies are supposed to serve the public, not manipulate the public into serving the infrastructure the agency prefers.

Spending millions on a parking lot to fit 20 more cars because a few people don't want to drive to another trail or get their workout at the gym isn't serving the public. You're asking tax payers to open their wallets and make your playtime slightly more convenient.

There should be a rule about Trailhead Direct threads: you can only comment if you've tried it. (Oops, better get on that, but who in their right mind would do Mailbox on a summer weekend?) Buses are indeed slow and inconvenient, but it's nice to have the option available. 69% of 19 year olds don't even have a license these days. Personally, I think we've got it all backwards, and would rather see cars removed from urban centers than from trailheads. Perhaps, like Teneriffe, Mailbox should have both bus service and a giant parking lot. Still though, something in me cringes over a giant slab of pavement that's useless to me and rarely utilized near capacity. But if Mailboxers are truly messing with river access, that seems like a problem that needs addressing.

It doesn't take millions to park 20 more cars. It takes a dozer and the will to park more cars, instead of working against customers. Any cost insanity is due to paperwork and regulatory fustercluck, not the actual getting it done. I don't need to theorize on why people want to drive, wether it be avoiding the gym, or not driving to another trail. The demand itself, is itself the reason to serve the customer. Any reason they have is valid, regardless of why. That includes folks who would rather ride a bus. This need not be an either/or.
