There should be a rule about Trailhead Direct threads: you can only comment if you've tried it. (Oops, better get on that, but who in their right mind would do Mailbox on a summer weekend?) Buses are indeed slow and inconvenient, but it's nice to have the option available. 69% of 19 year olds don't even have a license these days. Personally, I think we've got it all backwards, and would rather see cars removed from urban centers than from trailheads. Perhaps, like Teneriffe, Mailbox should have both bus service and a giant parking lot. Still though, something in me cringes over a giant slab of pavement that's useless to me and rarely utilized near capacity. But if Mailboxers are truly messing with river access, that seems like a problem that needs addressing.

Has anyone here actually done the mailbox hike? How is the view from the top?

Spending millions on a parking lot to fit 20 more cars because a few people don't want to drive to another trail or get their workout at the gym isn't serving the public. You're asking tax payers to open their wallets and make your playtime slightly more convenient.
Doesn't every car owner pay the states taxes AND the $30 pass tax?

Many set out on this arduous trek, but few make it. The view is rumored to be spectacular, but the peak is heavily glaciated and the trail goes through grizzly country. I'm just messing with you. The view is similar to a lot of I90 peaks, and is extremely crowded.

Sure, and that lets you park in the lot that exists at the trailhead. If you get there early enough to find parking. If you take the bus, you don't have to worry about parking.

I thought Mount Si was the only glaciated I-90 peak? wink.gif

It's a 45 minute bike ride from the outlet mall lot to the Mailbox trailhead. Come on, get your multi-sport game on.

The short putt is simply allowing road parking again.

Mt Si has had similar issues for decades -- since the '70s. Towing cars parked along the road there has been done to avoid problems with the road being constricted by parked cars and creating issues for travelers (and residents) headed farther up the MF road. If Mailbox was at the end of the road, roadside parking would be NBFD. However on a busy weekend hundreds of other vehicles pass the Mailbox trailhead.

that makes sense, I can see how that gets unwieldy.

Parking along the road makes it difficult or impossible for emergency vehicles to get by, and the chances of a vehicle-pedestrian accident are increased. This was an issue at Blanca as well (there, trucks with horse trailers couldn't get by all the cars and were often boxed in). So while allowing parking along the road seems like a nice idea hiker convenience, it isn't the only consideration the agencies consider.

The Mailbox trail is too short and not much of a workout. Anyone really needing to train should be starting at North Bend's outlet mall. Then it's a real hike.
