Finally got some time off social obligations to hit the trail on Sunday. I met up with a couple friends at the St. Helens visitor center outside Castle Rock and we started hiking at 8:30. Weather was drizzly to start but soon dried up a bit until we hit one of the saddles on the traverse towards the peak, but never rained too hard or was too windy. The trail to the top was mostly snow-covered from the final junction and beyond, but snow conditions were great for easy kick-stepping. The scientific monitoring equipment at the top of the peak made for a good windblocker while we had lunch. Unfortunately it was too foggy to get any views of St. Helens all day but there were some rather nice views of St. Helens Lake environs and we even got a glimpse of Spirit a couple times. Still a great day in the hills. smile.gif

Nice to see a trip report from that area! What trailhead did you start at?

Thanks! We headed east on 504 towards Johnston Ridge. The gate was open at the Boundary Trail trailhead, so we went past to the trailhead about a mile past it. I'm not sure what the name was, but you get onto the South Coldwater Trail #230A from there. https://caltopo.com/l/D3FL

I thought that looked familiar. I've hiked that trail several times in winter, but only to Blastzone Butte. Never been up there when the snow is melted out. The time I did Coldwater I came in from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Anyway, looks like a nice moody day in the mountains! haha
