The 1956 original..
...and a little more up-tempo cover recorded at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1970.

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

Glamour magazine has a series showing singers reacting to you tubers doing covers of their songs. Pink was absolutely blown away by this one. Apparently the singer was already fairly well known in her country The Netherlands, but she blew up world wide after this.

Here's the original recording of this composition by Joe and Audrey Allison, recorded in 1959 by Billy Brown:
After hearing it on his car radio, Jim Reeves covered it the same year, where on the "B" side of a 45 rpm single, it shot up to #2 on the Billboard charts:
In 1976, Ry Cooder covered it on "Chicken Skin Music" with the incomparable Flaco Jimenez on accordion;
... and because there's no such thing as too much Flaco, here's a delightful live performance from 1977:

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

A true classic.
I definitely wouldn't say the cover version is better, but it's cool to see a new generation appreciating the music. The lead singer seems to pull back a few times when she's about to cut lose. The background vocals nail it. The bass player is really into it. This song brings a smile to my face.

brought to mind this little piece of mastery by Mssrs. Benson and Klugh:

Sweet! I may have put up Luna's version of sweet Child o Mine on this thread. If not, I meant to.

I've still got the vinyl, but I'm old. Did anyone cover "How can I miss you when you won't go away"?

I don't always pay that much attention to musical scores from movies. "Last of the Mohicans" has one of the most evocative, moving scores I've ever heard. The scene where Hawkeye and his dad and brother are chasing down the splinter group of Hurons, the music is just perfect.
Here's a few different takes on it.

I don't think the original can be improved upon, but it's a nice cover anyway.

You might want to check out this delightful cover by Ry Cooder and the incomparable Flaco Jimenez:
and (again) because there's just no such thing as too much Flaco, here's a live version:

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

Flaco! I know him from some guest appearances on songs by Dwight Yoakam and The Mavericks.

Here are a couple, and there is a connection between the two originals. Bonus points (big, big, bonus points) if you can guess the connection (I'll list it at after the videos). First up, one of my favorite jams. I've lost a lot of hearing due to the cover (and the original is nice as well):
Second is a bluegrass cover (which seems to be popular on this thread). I think I like the original just a little bit better, but man, that cover is something special:
OK, can you guess the connection between the two originals? It has nothing to do with the artists, but the recording. Both were produced by Gus Dudgeon. Gus was the guy that came up with the "Fake Live" production of Bennie and the Jets. That was brilliant, and one of the more famous studio effects ever done. It had me fooled for years (how come you never hear the studio version of Bennie and the Jets? Dude, that is the studio version. ... whoa ...).
