Did someone say Flaco Jimenez? I'll take any excuse to post a video with Flaco. Here he is with the Texas Tornados covering Butch Hancock's great song "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me"

that elitist from silverdale wanted to tell me that all carnes are bad--Studebaker Hoch

I did indeed say Flaco, but I don't want to take this thread off the rails so here you go! wink.gif

Well, an edited compilation, not even a complete cover...only two/thirds... David Bowie and Eddie Vedder start it out and then David Gilmour kicks in with the real thing! stun.gif

nope.... that's THIS "Ice Cream Man" (a cover of Waits' 1973 original):

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

and certainly no connection to THIS "Ice Cream Man", but the hairstyles are kind of groovy:

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

and this little ditty has no connection to any other "Ice Cream Man" other than the title:

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

... and while there are certainly some interesting side stops along the way, I still think that Dave pulls it off best, even with crappy audio and way too much cocaine:

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

working our way down the rabbit hole.... As near as I can determine, the earliest recording of what we know today as "Just a Gigolo" was recorded by French recording star Damia in 1929:
And the earliest recording of "I Ain't Got Nobody Much (and Nobody Cares for Me)" appears to have first been recorded on August 9, 1916 in Camden, New Jersey on Victor 18133 by Marion Harris with Ted Levy on piano:
It would appear the song's title has been changed somewhat since it was originally published:
Aint Got Nobody Much (and Nobody Cares for Me) Victor 18133 1916
Aint Got Nobody Much (and Nobody Cares for Me) Victor 18133 1916
Over the course of several decades, both compositions were recorded by various artists before they were both combined into one recording by Louis Prima in 1956:
Prima's arrangement was covered in 1978 by The Village People:
Which brings us to the version most here are probably more familiar with - the one done by the inimitable David Lee Roth in 1985:

"I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

Okay, just stumbled onto this. So apparently the version most of us know of this song isn't even the original, some famous other people did it first (Kingston Trio, David Crosby, Jefferson Airplane) but this one really caught on.
I've heard a tiny bit of Bahari before, but not this cover. It seems like they should be more well known than they are. Three beautiful women from California who can sing, should be a winning formula (one of them has since left the band so they are now a duo).
