After climbing Lincoln Peak last month I still needed to climb Mount Baker's two other sub peaks, Colfax and Sherman. Dave still needed to climb the true summit of Mount Baker so we agreed to join each other and see each others goals met!
We drove out to the Heliotrope Ridge trailhead on Sunday night after my beer got knocked on Dave's lap at the Aslan Brewery (sorry Dave). We hit the hay at 10 and woke up at 1:30. We were moving at 2:15. The creek crossings were a little sporty but I was able to keep my socks dry. We were able to hike to the first campsites above treeline before switching from trail runners to boots.
Once above tree-line we could tell there was a thick cloud deck below 9k and I thought we might be ascending into a whiteout.
Sunrise Lifting clouds
As we were roping up for our crossing of the Coleman, the clouds began to lift and it appeared that the forecast for bluebird skies was indeed correct. The established route on the Coleman only had 2 or 3 notable crevasse jumps. We stayed roped up to the summit of Colfax, as Id heard of a crevasse fall up there. We topped out before 8am. We had perfect snow for climbing.

I took a quick nap at the saddle between E Colfax and Colfax (the winds were fierce everywhere else), then we descended to Colfax Col. Sherman was up next. We decided to ascent several hundred feet up the Roman Wall route to get above all crevasses on the Deming Glacier, then traverse over to the Easton. This plan worked well, with only minor pucker effect.

After crossing the Deming, we cruised up Sherman. I think we topped out around 10:15. The day was going well.

After Sherman, we slogged up to Baker's summit plateau. It was hard work.
Dave working hard my 2nd Baker summit and Dave's 56th Bulger! Bulger 56 in the books Colfax and Lincoln
We left the summit at 11:51 and made the car at 3:38. Pretty good, faster than the skiers

On our way down as we neared the one fairly gnarly crevasse jump, I watched some dude coming up, jump the crevasse. As he passed us by I noticed that he was wearing casual hiking boots, had some walmart trekking poles and micro-spikes, no axe. I asked him if he was going for the top?
"Maybe."

Nice work dude! With my out of country ass going to be out of shape when I return you might beat me to the P400s as well! How many do you have left?
That crevasse fall on Colfax you heard about was probably mine...

This cracked me up because we saw this exact thing on the Roman Wall a few weeks ago. Cotton t-shirt and jorts, microspikes, no ice axe

I almost never climb Baker any more without seeing at least one of this sort. When (if) they make it back OK, they no doubt say to their friends and acquaintances that climbing Baker is no big deal at all and why should they have all that expensive equipment? Ignorance and arrogance...which is worse?
