I decided the best place to be on one of the hottest days of this spring would be a snowy high elevation trail, so I headed up Tunnel Creek near Stevens Pass. A heavenly breeze greeted me as I reached the PCT and Hope Lake. Usually there is a welcoming committee of biting insects at the lake, not so today, although that would come later. There was still snow at the lake inlet and a wonderful display of marsh marigolds.

After a snack, I headed south up the PCT and almost immediately encountered snow on the trail, alternating with little rushing creeks and mud.

Many snow covered sections were collapsing, making travel a bit interesting.
Soon a swarm of lonesome mosquitoes discovered me, so I had to stop and apply bug repellent, the first time this year,
My goal was to get up to the gully crossing at the top of the switchbacks, where I could get a nice view towards the Chiwaukums. The snow became deeper and more challenging, but I was able to reach that point.

Part way across, there is a steep section that requires an ice axe, so I turned around here. This picture shows the trail as it crosses the upper part of the gully.

After taking a few more pictures, I reluctantly headed back, not wanting to leave the pleasant coolness of the snow. On the way, I passed three other parties coming up the trail to escape the lowland heat, happy to find relief on this very hot day.
Did you come in from Josephine? Ok looks like tunnel creek.
