This week I hiked Trout Lake, to Windy Pass Tarn, to Doctor Creek to lakes Cara and Ruth. Round trip, I could count the black flies on one hand and the skeeters on the other with fingers left over. I was shocked. I passed by a lot of bogs, meadows, streamlets, ponds, lakes, and streams. I expected to be eaten alive. A very pleasant surprise indeed.
Last week Buck Creek valley and surrounding environs were absolutely infested with deer flies which gave way to horseflies at higher elevations. Conditions down in the valley were barely tolerable. Up at the pass there were fewer flies, but still way too many. In the evening there was a shift change and the flies went to bed as the mosquitoes came out, but there weren't many mosquitoes and they went away once it was full dark.
I know where I'll find those nasty bitey critter:Scotland !
going there next week. Without a doubt the midges will be worse than ever.
I'll let ya all know how that goes..
BTW went to Malachite and Trout lakes today.
Swam in both. No bites at either

Was up in the Daniel locales the other day no bugs!! Even down at squaw where y'always got big groups completely moved in for a long stay just sitting around burning fires and lounging in the smokey campsite all day to get the bugs off. I'm thinking they're just gone now!!
