Campfires are not allowed in Alpine Lakes Wilderness above 5,000. High use/sensitive areas often high more restrictions.
I believe he's talking about the Red Pass in Glacier Peak Wilderness.
Yep. The only Red Pass I'm aware of is in the GPW and there are no elevation based restrictions on fires in the GPW except on Lime Ridge. Is there one in the Alpine Lakes too?

Sorry wolffie, But I gotta disagree with the green horn statement. Just spent a few days deep in the GPW and cooked trout over a fire every night. I don't consider myself a green horn. Just my opinion though. Shane

Well I'll be. I knew there was a red mountain by Snoqualmie but had never heard of that red pass. So I guess it depends on where Wolffie was talking about.

The subject is a fire at Blue Lakes in the Glacier Peak area, and nearby Red Pass up there is at approx 6500', fires are allowed there, so I'm guessing that's the Red Pass he's talking about. up.gif

Nothing wrong with cooking a trout over a fire in the mountains. You can tell though, if someone has a big fire on a lake shore on a hot august day, they are probably rookies or kids.

I make a fire, especially when I wanna eat some freshly caught trout; fires when properly cared for are fun to make, warm and promote fellowship, especially if you have kids along. Not everyone who makes one is a greenhorn or a pyromaniac. It seems to me blanket statements and black and white rules are not helpful in regards to fires (or just about anything for that matter).

When they say no fires allowed then there's pretty much no discussion.

I am not saying we shouldn`t follow the rules; many times I have removed the extra rings created by people in sites there should only be one and of course keep the alpine zone fire free; but blanket statements saying no fires anywhere and anyone who builds one is stupid, etc seems too closed minded IMHO.

When fishing and rafting, one typically gets pretty wet, so a fire is necessary to ward off hypothermia.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Solar radiation works best for me after rafting. The last time I had a campfire after rafting I found the embers turned my Curtis raft into swiss cheese. doh.gif https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3578
