Why Do Witches Burn?

Lots of lightning a few days ago but haven't heard about anything other than brush fires out in sagebrush country. Anyone have any lines on whether any fires are going up in the mountains? https://www.facebook.com/OkaWenNF/photos/a.784724688311718/2250456268405212/?type=3&theater

Looks like there's something going on at Index Creek north from Icicle river. https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=47.64505,-120.86165&z=13&b=t&o=r&n=0.25&a=modis_mp There's also the Left Hand fire near Cliffdell off 410 Naches, so I'd probably avoid trying to go through there for anything.

From Mt. Rainier I could see a plume of smoke that was fairly wide I thought somewhere between the east side of American Ridge and the west end of Nelson Ridge. That was probably the Left Hand but leaves open the possibility there is another fire in that area. We guessed there was another fire perhaps 15 miles east of the Goat Rocks but maybe that was just the downwind smoke from the Cliffdell fire. There appear to be several other fires from the Facebook Page map accompanying the Lefthand Fire blog: https://www.facebook.com/LeftHandFire/ Going into this lightning storm, I looked at the U of MM5 a couple days before this and saw that a narrow band was forecast to drift NNEward from near Mt. Adams to around the Enchantments. It looks like that is what happened. Al fires that develop should be in that area. Looking forward, although yet uncertain, we face another potential risk perhaps in the time frame of August 8th to 10th or so. Otherwise it is a dry forecast but perhaps hot after the 4th for several days.

Super bummed to year that there’s a fire burning in Devore Creek. There’s potential that that’ll really blow up and burn until October.

Looks like it's burning on pt 7660 AKA Puzzle Peak. It sounds like they are predicting it to spread east towards Castle Creek and Castle Rock. From the U.S. Forest Service - Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Facebook page:
Quote:
Wildfire Update/Lake Chelan Area: Air, ground resources to assess options on Devore Creek Fire, July 27, 2019 - 9:00am • Acres: 100 • Personnel: 30 • Location: 3 miles southwest of Stehekin, Washington • Cost: Unknown • Start Date: July 23, 2019 • Cause: Lightning • Completion: 0% Due to the fire’s location in extreme terrain above 8,000 feet in heavy timber, fire managers will focus on limiting fire spread toward the community of Stehekin, Washington. Today ground based firefighters will hike into the Stehekin River Trail area to scout the condition of the community protection line established in 2015 on the southwestern edge of the community. If high winds allow, air resources ordered yesterday evening will provide aerial support, including bucket drops to cool hot spots. Prevailing winds from the west should help limit fire spread toward this community and will likely push the fire east towards Castle Rock. Firefighters observed no new growth overnight and the fire remains three miles from the community. The naturally ignited fire is entirely within the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Evacuations: None. Closures: The Devore Creek Trail #1244 and Company Creek Trail #1243 are currently closed for public safety. Smoke: Smoke may be highly visible from Chelan and Winthrop. Air quality is currently ‘good’ for area smoke monitors. currently here there are a couple of small fires of less than 500 acres. nothing like last years as yet. the coming warmer weather and winds may change that.

Steve and I spent the night at Larch Lakes (Entiat) this weekend and the Devore fire smoke plume was very prominent from the Garland Peak trail on our way out.

Thanks for sharing this beta. I've been worried that Aug is going to end up like it has the last 2 years, and counting each blessing here as we've continued to stay smoke free. Let's hope we keep getting some bursts so we can keep enjoying this awesome season!

We are getting a wee bit of smoke in varying amounts from a close by Canadian fire. It comes and goes and is nothing like last year. The fire is out of Cawston somewhere.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

My daughter Inreach texted us tonight and mentioned something about a possible fire around Lake Edna.

Index Creek. Digitaljanitor mentioned the possibility above. Craig Romano posted pictures of it on NW Hikers & Climbers.
