I recently tried accessing the Mount Fernow Potholes but failed.
Attempt #1: Parked at the end of the longest switchback on the forest road up to johnson ridge and wanted to hike 1800' up to the potholes but couldn't find a safe way to cross johnson creek so turned back.
Attempt #2: Parked at the last switchback before johnson ridge trailhead and followed a very old road bed along the 3800' contour line. All went well until just over 2 miles in, had to cross johnson creek and then got thwarted by a very large, thick patch of large berry bushes with no trace of the road continuing on.
I drew red lines indicating (roughly) the routes I tried. I am planning on making another attempt from the johnson ridge trail past scorpion mountain on the way to joan lake. If anyone has beta to share on the potholes, even pm so it's kept on the down low, would be much appreciated!
