Devils Tongue 8048' I headed up to Canada after work on Friday to get the long drive over with to car camp at the Nepopekum day use area. Fletcher, Kyle and JakeA would come in much later that night to meet up so we could get going fairly early on Saturday. It really didn't matter that I got there early, I didn't get any more sleep that night than the other guys. We got going a little after 7am and hiked a half mile to the Skagit River crossing. The water didn't feel so cold at first but half way through, we really started to feel it's coldness. We saw some flagging on the other side and followed a well flagged trail to another trail junction. We took a right turn and started on our way to the Galene Lakes. To our big surprise, this trail is in great shape. There are only a couple of down logs along the way with obvious signs of recent maintenance. We tried to keep a good pace to keep the minimal amount of mosquitos away from us. The skies were overcast but the cloud level seemed to be rising as we went along and reached the Middle Lake. It had taken about 3 hours to get there, so we took a nice break and loaded up on water. We weren't sure if we'd run into any more water along the rest of the route, so each of us took between 4-6 liters with us for camp and the next day.

We headed up to the ridge with much heavier packs now because of the water. At the ridge, we found ourselves in gorgeous, grassy meadows. I can see why other trip reports have raved about this area. Even with the cloudy skies, it was extremely nice.

One of the other nice treats along the way were the many ripe blueberries waiting to be picked and eaten by us. We ate them by the handfuls as we frequently made stops for snacks. We dropped down across the border swath and then headed up towards Silver Ridge. We had to dive back down into the forest for a little while but it was fairly easy navigating. Above a steepish talus field, we dropped our packs and headed East for a short ways to tag East Silver Ridge for our 1st peak of the trip.

We dropped down another 500' feet or so to the next low point and then back up into some nice ridge walking. Although it was still early in the day, we were looking for the best place to make our camp. We went up and over the next 2 bumps and found a nice flat spot with good views of our objective.

We arrived at our camp site at 230pm and set camp. We had a lot of time to go tag Devils Tongue but questioned whether we should wait for better weather the next day for better views. We allowed ourselves an hour to decide to go for it or stay at camp. The weather didn't improve so we gambled that Sunday would be the better choice for a summit try. It was good times hanging around camp with some good guys. After some whiskey and dinner, we were all ready for a good nights sleep well before 9.

We woke to improved weather on Sunday morning. We left camp a little after 6am for some more ups and downs to the Pk. On our way to Pt 7103, the rock scramble was fun and grippy, on the other side, it was loose and not as fun. We took some time on some scree and talus to descend into the basin below the Pk.

To our surprise, Fletcher spotted some water trickling from a snow patch that we were excited to see. We took a good water break before getting over to the start of the East ridge scramble. Once on the ridge, we headed up nice rock with several options of where to go. We reached one particular spot where we caught our first views of the impressive Silver Lake. We were really happy about waiting for Sunday with the nice weather we were having.

We kept at the easy scrambling and found ourselves at the summit to great views over to the Chilliwacks. This is definitely one of the best summit views I can remember!

We stayed at the summit for about a 1/2 hour enjoying the views. We made our way back down and loaded up on water again at the snow patch.

We made it back to camp and were packed up and leaving by 11am. We had a goal of getting back to the TH by 3. We enjoyed the grassy meadows again as we ate more blueberries on our way to the lakes.

The hike out was easy enough as we reached the Skagit river around 3pm with a little more hiking to go. I was so happy these guys decided to come along to help me get to #200 on the t200 list. I couldn't imagine a more scenic peak to finish off the list and such a fun group. 23.25 miles 10800' elevation gain 2 days

Now that you have reached your lofty goal, how about trying Roper's in-jest lists: http://www.rhinoclimbs.com/Lowest100.htm and http://www.rhinoclimbs.com/blobpeakpin.htm
